StopHateAB stands with and supports communities affected by all forms of hate, providing education, information, and proactive initiatives to foster a hate-free Alberta.

To empower Albertans to eliminate hate by building safer communities rooted in justice, dignity, and respect.
In working in collaboration of community, non-profits, government, law enforcement, justice and human rights institutions, StopHateAB seeks to bring comprehensive insight to issues of incidents and crime motivated by hate.
StopHateAB is committed to anti-hate initiatives and creating safe communities across Calgary Alberta supporting vulnerable groups targeted by hate based on race/ethnicity, 2SLGBTQIA+, faith/religion, people with disabilities, Indigenous communities, people from low socio-economic statuses. We work to foster an environment where all Albertans live in an inclusive, safe, caring and respectful hate-free community.

Our Principles
Our work is guided by principles that ensure every initiative is inclusive, transparent, and effective. These values shape how we collaborate, make decisions, and create lasting change across Alberta communities.
Inclusive
Members of communities in Alberta have meaningful opportunities to participate actively in the development and implementation of AHCC initives. Strategies are in place to ensure that youth and members of targeted grouples have equitable opportunity to participate.
Transparent
Interested stakeholders have ease of access to information.
Results-Oriented
Innovative, practical and measurable strategies and actions are supported
Responsive
People with expertise in various areas pertaining to hate are consulted throughout the develoment and implementation of any initives to ensure they meet the needs of all stakeholders.
Innovative
Outcomes addressing hate/bias crime and incidents are improved by initives that recognize and model best practices.
Collaborative
Capacity of collaboration between policing, justice, service agencies, and communities is encouraged and enhanced.

The StopHateAB Contribution Award
The StopHateAB Contribution Award is presented annually to individuals who have made significant contributions to preventing hate crimes and hate incidents, supporting victims, advancing education and research, and fostering safer, more inclusive communities across Alberta.

Landon Turlock (they/them)
RSW, BSW, MA
2026 Recipient
Landon Turlock is a social worker, educator, researcher, and community advocate dedicated to preventing hate, promoting equity, and fostering safer, more inclusive communities across Alberta. Their work spans government, post-secondary education, and community organizations, where they have educated thousands of Albertans, strengthened cross-sector partnerships, informed public policy, and advanced initiatives that support survivors of hate crimes and incidents.
Landon serves as a Social Planner with the City of Edmonton, is a Sessional Instructor at MacEwan University, a PhD student at the University of Calgary, and Co-Coordinator of the Investigaytors Program with the Queer and Trans Health Collective. Through their leadership, research, and community engagement, Landon continues to advance meaningful systems change and strengthen support for communities impacted by hate.
Senator Dr. Kristopher Wells
2025 Recipient
Senator Dr. Kristopher Wells is a nationally recognized educator, researcher, and human rights advocate whose work has advanced diversity, equity, inclusion, and human rights across Alberta and Canada. He currently serves as a Senator representing Alberta and previously served as MacEwan University’s first Canada Research Chair and founding Director of the Centre for Sexual and Gender Diversity.
Throughout his career, Dr. Wells has been a leading voice on inclusive education, hate prevention, and public policy. He has served on numerous provincial and national advisory bodies, including the Alberta Hate Crimes Committee (now StopHateAB), helping shape initiatives that promote safer, more welcoming communities for all.
Irfan Chaudhry
2024 Recipient
Irfan Chaudhry is a leader in equity, diversity, inclusion, and human rights with extensive experience advancing inclusive policies and community engagement initiatives across Alberta. He currently serves as Vice President, Diversity and Inclusion at Hockey Canada and has previously held leadership roles with MacEwan University and the City of Edmonton.
Irfan also served as Vice President of the Alberta Hate Crimes Committee, now known as StopHateAB, where he helped advance the organization’s mission to address hate crimes and hate incidents through education, research, collaboration, and community partnerships. His leadership continues to influence efforts to build more inclusive and equitable communities across Canada.
Renee Vaugeois
2023 Recipient
Renee Vaugeois is a respected human rights leader, community builder, and strategist with more than two decades of experience advancing human rights, social justice, and community safety. She served as President of the Alberta Hate Crimes Committee, now known as StopHateAB, and is the founding Executive Director of the John Humphrey Centre for Peace and Human Rights.
Throughout her career, Renee has built strong cross-sector partnerships, led large-scale community initiatives, advanced public policy, and championed education as a tool for creating meaningful social change. Her leadership has helped strengthen Alberta’s response to hate, discrimination, and systemic inequities while fostering more inclusive communities.
